Neil Schroeder

Howdy neighbor! Welcome to a cozier corner of the internet. My name is Neil, and I like to cook, listen to music, take care of plants, travel with my partner, hike, read, write, and a few other odds and ends.

As of writing I am the lead developer at Eagle Rock Analytics where I lead a very talented team of research software engineers, contribute to open-source scientific projects, and manage California’s public climate data.

I have a PhD in high energy physics, but that’s a past life at this point. My thesis focused on improving detector calibration software — think high dimensional optimization problems.

I left academia to pursue a better work-life balance in industry and spent some time as a machine learning engineer working on agricultural robotics problems. I had a lot of fun at that job. I got to ask — and answer — fun questions like “can you teach a computer to distinguish between subspecies of corn?”. The answer is yes, surprisingly.

I also worked for a time in finance as a data scientist. For a plethora of reasons I decided I would move on to something else.

And then I landed at Eagle Rock Analytics — a Science-as-a-Service consulting company.

Please poke around, and feel free to shoot me a message if you’d like to chat!
